چکیده

In recent years investigations into the physiology of green algae have been stimulated by a recognition of their possible commercial use (6) in addition to their common acceptance as research tools for certain fundamental problems. These physiological studies have shown that green algae have a high nitrogen content. A correspondingly high protein content has been inferred (28). Relatively little attention has been given to the utilization of the absorbed nitrogen or to changes in the nitrogen fractions of cells subjected to a changing environment. Comparisons with higher plants (7, 30) have not been possible because of the necessity for large and frequent samples of algae required for reliable analytical determinations. The development of a mass culture technique (14, 16) has made this feasible. This paper reports an extensive study of the nitrogen metabolism of a representative, fresh-wN-ater, green alga, Scenedesmus obliquus (Turp.) Kiutz., grown in mass culture. Changes in the content of the major nitrogen fractions are correlated with modifications in the environment, and a basis is established for future detailed examination of specific pathways of nitrogen metabolism.

Efficiency of Microalgae Scenedesmus in the Removal of Nitrogen from Municipal Wastewaters

Background: Due to the high content of nitrogen in the municipal wastewaters, this study evaluated the efficiency of Scenedesmus as an important microalgae in the removal of nitrate from wastewaters and its application as an appropriate culture medium. As algae have high resistance to temperature and pH changes, they can absorb low concentrations of nutrients and need simple low-cost technolog...

Grazer-induced morphological defense in Scenedesmus obliquus is affected by competition against Microcystis aeruginosa

The green alga Scenedesmus is known for its phenotypic plasticity in response to grazing risk. However, the benefits of colony formation induced by infochemicals from zooplankton should come with costs. That is, a tradeoff in benefit-to-cost ratios is likely under complex environmental conditions. In this study, we hypothesized that the coexistence of Scenedesmus and its competitors decreases t...

Optimization of nitrogen and phosphorus removal from meat processing wastewaters using microalgal biofilms

Background: The conventional activated sludge processes are not able to completely treat the nitrogen and phosphorus compounds of meat processing wastewaters. Microalgal biofilm, which has the advantages of easiness and inexpensiveness, can be applied as a post-treatment method. Methods: The optimal levels of micronutrients and N/P ratio were aimed in the cultivation of Scenedesmus quadricauda...

Reduced grazing rates in Daphnia pulex caused by contaminants: implications for trophic cascades.

Ecotoxicological endpoints based on behavioral traits (e.g., predator avoidance, feeding, and locomotion) may be more sensitive and give more insights into patterns of sublethal toxicity than survivorship tests. In this study, the density-dependent grazing rate of Daphnia pulex pre-exposed to p,p'-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (DDE) (insecticide metabolite) and glyphosate (herbicide), via wa...

Superior triacylglycerol (TAG) accumulation in starchless mutants of Scenedesmus obliquus: (II) evaluation of TAG yield and productivity in controlled photobioreactors

BACKGROUND Many microalgae accumulate carbohydrates simultaneously with triacylglycerol (TAG) upon nitrogen starvation, and these products compete for photosynthetic products and metabolites from the central carbon metabolism. As shown for starchless mutants of the non-oleaginous model alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, reduced carbohydrate synthesis can enhance TAG production. However, these muta...
